Personality:
James is the next generation of his uncle Fred and would-have-been-uncle George. He loves to play tricks on people - his enemies, loved ones, anyone within sight distance, really. It does not matter who, as long as he earns praise for his creativity in practical jokes or a few laughs from the ones around. As you can clearly see, the boy craves admiration. He wants to be like his father - famous, honorable; this is his weakness.
James will do anything to be 'known' as his father was - this quite often gets him into trouble. Whether it be noble, courageous, out of jealousy or just plain spite, the boy yearns to become as celebrated as his dad [though some small part deep inside of him knows this can never happen], to make his family proud.
But the small part inside creates another feeling: anger; he can never be this. James is hot-headed, and hotheadedness provokes a sharp tongue. He oftens speaks without thought and snappish. This gets him into even more trouble, if possible.
Anger leads to guilt, which leads to fright, which leads to anger again - it's a never-ending circle [his mother taught him this when she was undercover as a Muggle psychologist, but let's not get into that]. Jealousy plays its part here. Why is he the only one to be trapped in this awful circle? Ah, but vile envy breaks him out, only for him to be pulled back in sooner or later.
And here are the many stages of the naive James Potter.
Appearance:
James resembles his father quite a bit, though not as much as his brother Albus. He lacks his fathers [grandmother's] green eyes, and has been bestowed gleaming brown ones, eagerly watching, soaking in knowledge and everything around him. No doubt he will make a wonderful Seeker as his father did.
Their hair is exactly the same, however; black, shaggy, and quite impossible to groom.
The boy is a foe of personal hygeine - he rarely washes his hands, leaving them grimy and slick with dirt. Miraculously, his fingernails stay clean most of the time, but it is his hair that needs the most tending to, as mentioned before. Bits and locks of it at times will simply not stay down, and a cowlick sprouts from the peak of his head every once in a while.
The boy, unfortunately, is host to one singular wart - a small, scrawny thing near the edge of his nail. His mother told him those were the hardest to get rid of, so he once tried to curse it off at Hogwarts; no such luck - he was sent to the Hospital Wing. His father told him to just leave it alone and it would go away in time. But time is a tricky thing, we all know, so this wart irritates James as nothing has before.
